When most people think of getting a massage, they likely picture themselves being rubbed with hot oils or stones in a serene and relaxing environment. While this type of massage does have a number of benefits–many of which are therapeutic–for those who are suffering from pain and certain health complications, medical massage is more beneficial. Medical massage, or chiropractic massage, is the application of massage by a licensed chiropractor in a manner that is meant to treat or manage certain health complications. At Kouimanis Chiropractic, massage is just one of the treatments that we use for our patients.
Massage and bodywork therapies refer to the application of various techniques to a patient’s muscles and soft tissues. These techniques can be used to treat a variety of different ailments and health complications, including:
Before you undergo any massage therapy treatments, our qualified chiropractor, Dr. Steven Kouimanis, will take a full health history assessment and explain to you why massage therapy may help. Massage can be useful for both children and adults alike.
At Kouimanis Chiropractic, massage is often used in combination with other treatment options, including both chiropractic care (readjustments and realignments of the spine) and physical therapy. We may also recommend that a patient make dietary or lifestyle changes, such as getting more sleep, reducing stress, or exercising on a regular basis.
One of the best things about massage therapy as a treatment for pain or other conditions is that it is non-invasive and has relatively few risks, unlike the use of prescription medications or surgery.
As stated above, before your massage session, our chiropractor will get a full health history and perform a physical exam to ensure that massage is an appropriate treatment option. If it is, he will guide you through what to expect during your massage. In a typical massage therapy session, you will undress to your level of comfort or wear loose-fitting clothing. Massages can vary in length depending upon the type of ailment being treated.
Sometimes, massage can be uncomfortable or painful; working out muscles and soft tissues in order to alleviate and mitigate pain and other complications is often trying. Tell your massage therapist if you are suffering any discomfort during the process.
At Kouimanis Chiropractic, we have worked with many patients over the years who were unable to find relief from pain and other ailments from traditional medicine. At our office, we understand the benefits of chiropractic care and massage and believe both to be effective treatment options for myriad health conditions.
