What is
chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is a branch of the healing arts. It is based upon the understanding that a normally functioning nervous system (especially the spine and nerves extending from the spine to various parts of the body) promotes good health.

Chiropractors specialize in the detection and correction of misalignments in the spine using manipulation techniques designed to remove stress from the nervous system.

Kouimanis Chiropractic FAQ

Q1

Do I Need a Referral from My General Practitioner in Order to See a Chiropractor?

Usually, you do not need a referral in order to get an appointment with a chiropractor. This is because chiropractors are primary care doctors, and as such, you can set up an appointment directly. Because different insurance plans have varying requirements for billing purposes, though, you should always check with your insurer first before scheduling.

Q2

Can Chiropractic Care Make My Condition Worse?

Many people are worried that going to the chiropractor will exacerbate their pain rather than alleviate it. However, when care is provided by a certified chiropractor, the treatment is non-invasive and should not leave you worse off in any way. Complications are rare.

Q3

If I Start Chiropractic Care, for How Long Will I Require Treatment?

Another concern that many new patients have is the fear that if they start chiropractic care, they will need to continue seeking care for months or even years to come. While it is recommended that patients periodically keep up on appointments to ensure that treatment is working as intended, getting care for life is only required in cases of very severe injuries.

Q4

I’ve Had Back Surgery – Can I Benefit from Chiropractic Care?

Depending upon the type of back surgery you’ve had, yes – you may absolutely benefit from chiropractic care. We can help you to alleviate pain and gain mobility in your spine, two things that are critical to living a comfortable life as you age.

Q5

Is Chiropractic Treatment Safe?

As stated above, chiropractic treatment is non-invasive and is completely safe when performed by a qualified chiropractor. The practice has an excellent safety record. Of course, no treatment is completely free of all adverse effects, but those associated with chiropractic care are rare.

Q6

Who Can Benefit from Chiropractic Care? Is it Safe for Adults and Children?

Almost anyone can benefit from chiropractic care, including both adults and children alike. The Mayo Clinic suggests not seeking a chiropractic adjustment if you have cancer in your spine, severe osteoarthritis, numbness or tingling in an arm or leg, instability in the spine and excessive motion of such, or an increased risk of stroke.

Q7

What Types of Certifications Do Chiropractors Have?

The typical person who is seeking chiropractic certification will have a four-year undergraduate degree, and will continue their studies at a higher level of professional study for four to five more years. Certification and licensure are governed by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Dr. Steven Kouimanis maintains his Doctor of Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic.

Q8

What Should I Look for in a Chiropractor?

There are two very important things that you should look for in a chiropractor: certification/credentials and experience. Once you have identified a chiropractor who has both, choose someone who is dedicated to improving the patient’s outcome and is committed to putting their clients first. You may be working with your chiropractor for a long time – choose someone with whom you feel comfortable.
